"Smoking" labels on two new PG-13 films (still rare)

The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has labeled two upcoming PG-13 films with “smoking” descriptors.

Dear Eleanor (Sony, PG-13 | Release TBA)

Rated PG-13 for some suggestive material and smoking.

Stars Jessica Alba, Josh Lucas, Liana Liberato, Isabelle Fuhrman.

IMDb.com summary: "Two teenage girls travel across the U.S. in 1962, during the chaos of the Cuban missile crisis, in search of Eleanor Roosevelt."

The Man Who Knew Infinity (AMC Networks > IFC, PG-13 | 29 April 2016)

Rated PG-13 for some thematic elements and smoking.

Stars Jeremy Irons, Dev Patel, Stephen Fry

IMDbPro.com summary: "Growing up poor in Madras, India, Srinivasa Ramanujan Iyengar earns admittance to Cambridge University during WWI, where he becomes a pioneer in mathematical theories with the guidance of his professor, G.H. Hardy."

From 2007 through 2015, the MPAA included “smoking” labels on ratings for 11 percent of all youth-rated, top-grossing films with smoking (38 of 335 films). This label is not a meaningful substitute for the R rating.
