Investors ask Time Warner to report on Sustainable Development Goals

Members of the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility (ICCR) have filed a shareholder proposal at Time Warner for inclusion in the company’s 2017 proxy statement, asking the company to report on how the company will assure shareholders that its polices and practices are advancing and not undermining the United Nation’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The SDGs, also know as the “Global Goals” were adopted unanimously by 193 governments and are aimed to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all as part of a new sustainable development agenda for the world.  In developing the goals, the UN recognized the role that the private sector has in achieving the SDGs.

Goal #3 is “Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.” This goal is linked to the 16 other SDGs.   The film industry could play a key role in achieving the Health goal by eliminating on-screen smoking in youth-rated movies.  This action would avert a million tobacco deaths.

So far this year, Time Warner’s youth-rated films have delivered more than half a billion tobacco impressions to domestic audiences alone.
